Our
Reach is Broad and Welcoming
By
intent and action, our reach is broad and welcoming.
The Christian principles of our
foundation continues to guide our programs and
operations. We serve persons of all ages, race and
religion. Our annual mission campaign raises funds
to provide financial assistance to families throughout St. Joseph. In 2007, the campaign awarded
$424,000 in direct financial assistance for people
to join the YMCA and participate in our programs. Our financial
assistance program makes membership and programs available no matter what their economic
situation is. If

Here
is just one of the many stories we have received.
A
New Start

Patsy, a single mom, has four children at home to
raise. She said, “I divorced in April 2000. A
month after we split, I found out I was pregnant with
twin boys, Marco and Mateo. This would change my
entire life, as I had to quit my job due to
unaffordable child care expenses. It cost me a
thousand dollars a month. I felt I had hit rock bottom
but was not going to go back to my alcoholic husband.
Alcoholism destroyed my marriage,
and once I left, I was never going back. I was
determined to make it on my own. I focused on working
and raising my kids with no help.” Beginning in
January of 2008, the YMCA helped Patsy by providing
financial assistance for 50% of her Childcare fees.
"I
am so thankful for programs like the YMCA Student
Enrichment Program that make it possible for me to
keep working. I have been in the work force for five
years now and only have a high school diploma. It is
not enough. I want my kids to go to college someday. We
all have a meaning and purpose in life. I let my
children know everyday how hard life can be if you don’t
make the right choices."
